A journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone in a week of viewing it.
Becca: You start to play it... and it's like somebody's nightmare. Then suddenly, this woman comes on. Smiling at you, right? Seeing you... through the screen. Then when it's over, your phone rings. Someone knows you watched it. And what they say is, "You will die in seven days". And exactly seven days later...
Noah: I can't imagine being stuck down a well all alone like that. How long could you survive? Rachel Keller: Seven days.
Ruth: Rachel, please. I saw her face.
Aidan Keller: What happened to the girl? Rachel Keller: Samara? Aidan Keller: Is that her name? Rachel Keller: Mm-hmm. Aidan Keller: Is she still in the dark place? Rachel Keller: No. We set her free. Aidan Keller: You helped her? Rachel Keller: Yeah. Aidan Keller: Why did you do that? Rachel Keller: What's wrong, honey? Aidan Keller: You weren't supposed to help her.
Dr. Scott: You don't want to hurt anyone. Samara Morgan: But I do, and I'm sorry. It won't stop.
[last lines] Aidan Keller: What about the person we show it to? What happens to them?
Harvey: You're fired. Rachel Keller: No, I'm not. Harvey: Yes, you are. Rachel Keller: No, I'm not! I'm cooking too good a story.
Aidan Keller: [to Rachel] Don't you understand, Rachel? [his nose starts bleeding] Aidan Keller: She never sleeps.
[first lines] Katie: I hate television. Gives me headaches. You know, I heard there's so many magnetic waves traveling through the air, because of TV and telephones, that we're losing, like, ten times as many brain cells as we're supposed to. Like, all the molecules in our heads are all unstable. All the companies know about it, but they're not doing anything about it. It's, like, a big conspiracy.
Aidan Keller: I don't think I'd make a good father. Maybe it was because my own was... such a... disappointment. Thing is, I don't want anyone else to do it, either. Be your father. Aidan Keller: It's a conundrum.
Rachel Keller: Come on, we shouldn't be in her room. Aidan Keller: It isn't her room anymore.
Noah: [after watching the tape] I'm sure it's a lot scarier at night.
Doctor: Your daddy loves you. Samara Morgan: Daddy loves the horses. He wants me to go away.
Teacher: Yes, I know, but these pictures... Rachel Keller: Are Aidan's way of working it out. He'll be okay. Teacher: [referring to Katie] You said that she died 3 days ago? Rachel Keller: Yes. Teacher: Aidan drew these last week.
Rachel Keller: I think before you die, you see the ring...
Doctor: Let's talk about these pictures you make. Samara Morgan: I don't make them, I see them... and then... they just... are.
Rachel Keller: He watched the tape. Noah: Who? who watched it? Rachel Keller: Our son.
Doctor: Your parents love you, Samara. Samara Morgan: Not Daddy.
Katie: Becca, quit being a bitch!
Samara Morgan: [singing by the well] : Here we go, the world is spinning. When it stops, it's just beginning. Sun comes up, we all laugh. Sun goes down, we all die...
Noah: [Referring to the tape] Look I'm sorry but I'm not gonna get all hung up on some high schooled rumor. [Rachel gives him a weird look] Noah: What are you thinking? Rachel Keller: I'm thinking this is the part where I tell you that you're a slug who never finishes anything and then you say I'm an obsessive bitch. Then I storm out all pissed off, kicking myself for ever thinking that you could just GROW UP!
Noah: [after watching the tape] Very student film.
Richard Morgan: What is it with reporters? You take one person's tragedy and force the world to experience it... spread it like sickness.
Ruth: I spent four hours on the internet and I couldn't find one single case of a 16-year-old girl's heart just stopping. I spoke to three different doctors and not one of them could tell me exactly what happened to my daughter.
Innkeeper: This is your card, right? Rachel Keller: That's it.
Library Clerk: 1978. Man, we're really going back in time, here. Noah: Yeah, lady at reception said it should still be here. Library Clerk: Should be. You say you're the patient's father, right? Noah: Yep, Richard Morgan, that's me. Library Clerk: What is your secret? Noah: Diet and exercise, man. Library Clerk: No shit... Noah: Yeah, that's all it takes. Library Clerk: You know, I'm not an idiot. You try and walk out of here with my file, and I'll be on you like white on rice, you understand?
Dr. Grasnik: See, when you live on an island you catch a cold, it's everybody's cold. Rachel Keller: No offense, ma'am, but what the hell does that mean? Dr. Grasnik: It means ever since that girl's been gone, things have been better.
Rachel Keller: What did you do to her? She was your daughter! You killed Samara, didn't you? You killed her and when your wife found out... Richard Morgan: My wife was not supposed to have a child!
Dr. Grasnik: She wanted a child more than anything, poor Anna. They tried hard for years, but sometimes it's just not meant to be. Then one winter they went away, when they came back it was with Samara, adopted they said, never said from where; said the mother died of complications. But they had their baby, they had their horses, everything was fine, until Anna started coming to see me. Said she was suffering visions, seeing things, horrible things, like they'd been burned inside her. And it only happened around Samara, like the girl put them there. Rachel Keller: Were you Samara's doctor too? Rachel Keller: Was there anything wrong with her? Dr. Grasnik: You mean medically? Rachel Keller: I mean whatever you mean.
Anna Morgan: All I ever wanted was you...
Rachel Keller: So, what was on this tape? Kellen, Male Teen #1: Well, I haven't seen it, obviously.
Samara Morgan: I love my mommy.
Samara Morgan: Seven days...
Rachel Keller: She wanted that child more than anything in the world. How could she have done that...? She just wanted to be heard. Sometimes children yell, or cry... or draw pictures...
Rachel Keller: Hey Noah, can you pretend for a second that I don't read "Video Geek Magazine"? Noah: Okay, when you record a tape, the makeup on the track is like a signature for whatever did the recording like a VCR, camcorder, or whatever, so the control track can tell us where it came from. But to not have one, I mean that's like being born without finger prints. Rachel Keller: Then how did this get recorded? Noah: I don't know.
Rachel Keller: I'll take cabin 12
Rachel Keller: Honey, the house you drew for me... Aidan Keller: Uh huh. Rachel Keller: Where did you see it? Did you see it in your head? Is that why you drew it? Aidan Keller: In my head? Rachel Keller: Aidan, why did you draw that house? Aidan Keller: 'Cause she told me to. Rachel Keller: Who? Who told you to? Aidan Keller: The little girl. Rachel Keller: She talks to you? Aidan Keller: No, she shows me things. Rachel Keller: Did she show you the horses? Aidan Keller: She doesn't like it in the barn. The horses keep her up at night. Rachel Keller: So she still lives there? Aidan Keller: No, she lives in a dark place now.
Aidan Keller: We don't have enough time. Rachel Keller: Oh, honey, I know I've been working a lot and I'm sorry. But I promise you, I'm going to make it up to you. Aidan Keller: I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about time before we die. Rachel Keller: You have lots of time. Aidan Keller: So, you know when I'm going to die? Rachel Keller: No, no one does. But I know you don't have to worry about it.
Cashier: You're gonna die. Noah: Huh? Cashier: My cousin was two packs a day. Used the patch - never looked back.
Rachel Keller: Would you say that I'm gullible? Noah: No. Rachel Keller: Easily rattled? Noah: Definitely not. I mean, you're a little highly-strung maybe. [gesturing to her clothes] Noah: Not much of a dresser.
Rachel Keller: Katie told you she was going to die? Aidan Keller: She said she didn't have enough time.
Rachel Keller: [Referring to Samara] Was there anything wrong with her? Dr. Grasnik: You mean... medically? Rachel Keller: I mean whatever you mean. Dr. Grasnik: [Looks at her grandson] When Darby there was born... we knew something wasn't right with him, but we loved him anyways. [Referring to The Morgans] Dr. Grasnik: It takes work you know... some people have limits.
Samara Morgan: Everyone will suffer.
Rachel Keller: Four people are dead. Noah: Not from watching a videotape.
Samara Morgan: [Speaking of her father] He wants me to go away. Doctor: No he doesn't. Samara Morgan: But he doesn't know... Doctor: He doesn't know what?
