Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.
Ed Warren: The devil exists. God exists. And for us, as people, our very destiny hinges on which we decide to follow.
April: When the music stops, you'll see him in the mirror standing behind you.
Rory: Want to play a game of hide and clap?
Lorraine Warren: Do you remember the thing you said on our wedding night? Ed Warren: Can we do it again? Lorraine Warren: No! The other thing, that God brought us together for a reason.
Ed Warren: Diabolical forces are formidable. These forces are eternal, and they exist today. The fairy tale is true. The devil exists. God exists. And for us, as people, our very destiny hinges upon which one we elect to follow.
Ed Warren: We've been called ghost hunters. Paranormal researchers. Wackos. Lorraine Warren: But we prefer to be known simply as Ed and Lorraine Warren.
[last lines] Lorraine Warren: The Vatican approved the exorcism. Ed Warren: [scoffs] Nice timing. Lorraine Warren: And, if we can, then he'd like to meet with us tomorrow. There's a case in Long Island he'd like to discuss. Ed Warren: Really?
Narrative: Since the 1960s, Ed and Lorraine Warren have been known as the world's most renowned paranormal investigators. Lorraine is a gifted clairvoyant, while Ed is the only non-ordained Demonologist recognized by the Catholic church. Out of the thousands of cases throughout their controversial careers, there is one case so malevolent, they've kept it locked away until now.
Lorraine Warren: You have a lot of spirits in here, but there is one I'm most worried about because it is so hateful.
Camilla: What's an inhuman spirit? Ed Warren: It's something that's never walked the Earth in human form. It's something demonic.
Lorraine Warren: She ran out to that tree by the dock, climbed up, proclaimed her love to Satan, cursed anyone who tried to take her land, and hung herself. Time of death was pronounced at 3:07 in the morning. Ed Warren: Well, that explains a few things.
Cindy: There's a lady in a dirty nightgown that I see in my dreams. She's standing in front of my mom's bed.
Roger Perron: Hear that? Carolyn Perron: I don't hear anything. Roger Perron: Exactly.
Ed Warren: Sometimes it's better to keep the genie in the bottle.
[first lines] Debbie: It scares us just thinking about it. When you hear it, you're gonna think we're insane. Ed Warren: Try Us. Please, from the start.
Drew: It did that to your face? Brad: I'd take a guy with a gun any day.
Carolyn Perron: There is something horrible happening in my house.
Christine: [a demonic presence, surrounded by a foul stench, lingers in the air] Stop farting. It really stinks. Nancy: Don't blame that on me, it's you.
Ed Warren: Everything you see in here is either haunted, cursed, or has been used in some kind of ritualistic practice.
Ed Warren: We keep everything locked in here. Feel free to look around. Just don't touch anything.
Carolyn Perron: What's up with Sadie? Roger Perron: Yeah, I don't know what her problem is. Couldn't get her to come inside. Carolyn Perron: Well, we can't leave her out there. Roger Perron: She's alright, I got her on a chain. [to barking dog] Roger Perron: Sadie! Be quiet!
Carolyn Perron: Roger, this clock stopped at 3:07 and so did the one in the hallway. Roger Perron: That's weird. Maybe it got knocked around in the move.
