As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.
Stacker Pentecost: Today. Today... At the edge of our hope, at the end of our time, we have chosen not only to believe in ourselves, but in each other. Today there is not a man nor woman in here that shall stand alone. Not today. Today we face the monsters that are at our door and bring the fight to them! Today, we are *canceling* the apocalypse!
Herc Hansen: Now, you and I are the only thing standin' between that ugly bastard and a city of 2 million people! Now we have a choice here: we either sit and wait, or we take these flare guns and do something really stupid.
Raleigh Becket: Wait. I think this guy's dead. But let's check for a pulse. Mako Mori: Okay. [They turn the Jaeger around and fire the Jaeger's plasma cannon into the kaiju four more times, exploding its chest] Raleigh Becket: No pulse.
Stacker Pentecost: Haven't you heard Mr. Beckett? The world is coming to an end. So where would you rather die? Here? or in a Jaeger!
Dr. Newton Geiszler: Fortune favors the brave, dude.
Raleigh Becket: There are things you can't fight, acts of God. You see a hurricane coming, you have to get out of the way. But when you're in a Jaeger, suddenly, you can fight the hurricane. You can win.
[first lines] Raleigh Becket: [narrating] When I was a kid, whenever I'd feel small or lonely, I'd look up at the stars. Wondered if there was life up there. Turns out I was looking in the wrong direction. When alien life entered our world, it was from deep beneath the Pacific Ocean. A fissure between two tectonic plates. A portal between dimensions. The Breach. I was fifteen when the first Kaiju made land in San Francisco. [pause] Raleigh Becket: By the time tanks, jets and missiles took it down, six days and 35 miles later, three cities were destroyed. Tens of thousands of lives were lost. We mourned our dead, memorialized the attack, and moved on. And then, only six months later, the second attack hit Manila. Newscaster: [on TV] The acid factor of the Kaiju blood creates a toxic phenomenon known as Kaiju Blue Raleigh Becket: Then the third one hit Cabo. And then the fourth. And then we learned this was not gonna stop. This was just the beginning. We needed a new weapon. The world came together, pooling it's resources and throwing aside old rivalries for the sake of the greater good. To fight monsters, we created monsters of our own. The Jaeger program was born.
Stacker Pentecost: One: don't you ever touch me again. Two: don't you ever touch me again. Now, you have no idea who the hell I am, or where I've come from, and I'm not about to tell you my whole life story. All I need to be to you and everybody on this dome is a fixed point. The last man standing. I do not need your sympathy or your admiration. All I need is your compliance and your fighting skills. And if I can't get that, then you can go back to the wall that I found you crawling on. Do I make myself clear? [Raleigh nods. Stacker turns his head away and gestures to his ear. Beckett grimaces, leans closer, and speaks] Raleigh Becket: Yes, sir. Stacker Pentecost: Good.
[last lines] Hannibal Chau: Where is my goddamn shoe?
Herc Hansen: Yeah! Chuck Hansen: Come on, Gipsy! Kick his ass!
[Newt enters Hannibal Chau's secret lab, where workers are busy dissecting and examining kaiju body parts. He is astonished by the amount of kaiju parts in perfect condition] Dr. Newton Geiszler: Oh, my God! Oh, my God, this place is heaven! That's a- that's a lymph gland from a Category 2! And, and, and what you working on here? Is this a cuticle? In mint condition? Is that a kaiju skin parasite? I-I've never seen them alive before. They- they usually *die* as soon as the kaiju falls! I thought you *couldn't* keep them alive! Hannibal Chau: You can if you soak them in ammonia. [Newt turns around and sees Hannibal. Hannibal approaches him] Hannibal Chau: What do you want? Dr. Newton Geiszler: I'm looking for Hannibal Chau. I was told he was here. Hannibal Chau: [stops] Who wants to know. Dr. Newton Geiszler: I really can't say. [Hannibal pulls his golden balisong and sticks the tip up Newt's right nostril] Dr. Newton Geiszler: Ahh! Ahh! Stacker Pentecost sent me! [Hannibal pulls balisong off Newt's nostril] Dr. Newton Geiszler: Ahh! Ahh! Oh, that's great! That's real great! So I take it you're- you're Hannibal Chau, right? Hannibal Chau: You like the name? I took it from, uh, my favorite historical character and my second-favorite Szechuan restaurant in Brooklyn. Now tell me what you want, before I gut ya like a pig and feed you to the skin louse!
Raleigh Becket: This is worth fighting for. We don't have to just obey him. Mako Mori: It's not obedience, Mr. Becket; it's respect.
[Gottlieb rushes in while the Gipsy Danger is going through its inaugural trial run] Gottlieb: Marshal! Marshal! I need to talk to you. Stacker Pentecost: [dismissively] Not now, Mr. Gottlieb. I'm sure you can appreciate how important this moment is to me. Gottlieb: Newton created a neural bridge from garbage and drifted with a Kaiju!
Raleigh Becket: [straining] You're squeezing me too tight.
Stacker Pentecost: Mr. Becket, this is our research team. Dr. Gottleib and Dr. Geiszler. Dr. Newton Geiszler: Oh, no, call me Newt. Only my mother calls me doctor. Hermann, these are human beings. Why don't you say hello? Gottlieb: I asked you not to refer to me by my first name when I'm around others.
[Newt enters Hannibal Chau's kaiju herbal store] Wizened Man: Pss-psst. You looking for some kaiju bone powder? Dr. Newton Geiszler: S-some bone...? Some bone powder? Uh, no, why would I want that? Wizened Man: [Gives gesture of erection] Male potency. I take it myself. Dr. Newton Geiszler: I see. Uh, no, thank you. [Showing card that has Chau's logo] Dr. Newton Geiszler: I'm- I- I'm looking for Hannibal Chau. Wizened Man: Come. Wizened Man: [Wizened Man approaches shelves and opens a secret entrance] Hannibal Chau, huh? Good luck.
Lt. A. Kaidanovsky: [in Russian; after Crimson Typhoon is destroyed by a Kaiju] Let's get this bastard!
Hannibal Chau: His lungs weren't fully formed. Umbilical cord tied around his neck. No way he could survive outside the womb for more than a minute. One look, that's all I needed. I knew he wouldn't make it. [Hannibal throws his golden balisong into the baby Kaiju's head and pulls it out] Hannibal Chau: Ugly bastard. Anyway, I woulda... [the Baby Kaiju rises and eats him before finally dying]
Raleigh Becket: [notices Dr. Geiszler's tattoo] Who is that, Yamarashi? Dr. Newton Geiszler: Oh, this little Kaiju? Yeah, you got a good eye. Raleigh Becket: My brother and I took him down in 2017. Dr. Newton Geiszler: You know, he's one of the biggest Category 3s ever. He was 2,500 pounds of awesome. [Raleigh gives him a cold look] Dr. Newton Geiszler: Or awful. You know, whatever you wanna call it. Gottlieb: Please excuse him. He's a Kaiju groupie. He loves them. Dr. Newton Geiszler: Shut up, Hermann, I don't love them, okay? I study them. And unlike most people, I wanna see one live and up close one day. Raleigh Becket: Trust me, you don't want to.
Dr. Newton Geiszler: Hey! Guess who's back, you one-eyed bitch? And you owe me a kaiju brain.
Stacker Pentecost: Mr. Becket, this is Mako Mori. One of our brightest. Also in charge of the Mark 3 restoration program. She personally handpicked your co-pilot candidates. Mako Mori: [speaks Japanese to Pentecost] I imagined him differently. Raleigh Becket: Hey. [speaks Japanese] Raleigh Becket: Better or worse? Mako Mori: [speaks Japanese] I apologize, Mr. Becket. I've heard a lot about you.
Gottlieb: This is all wrong! There should be three Kaijus coming through, not two! Dr. Newton Geiszler: There should be three and there's two? I'm sorry, it hurts to be wrong, don't it, Hermann? Gottlieb: I am not wrong, but there is something here we don't understand. Dr. Newton Geiszler: Okay. Hermann, we can hopefully argue about any mistakes you made in your your predictive model in the future. But in the meantime, the neural interfaces are way off the charts! If you want to help, help with that. Gottlieb: Newton, I am not wrong. There is only one way to make sure... and that is to do this... together. I'll go with you. That's what the Jaeger pilots do, share the neural load. Dr. Newton Geiszler: You're serious? You - You would do that for me? Or would do that with me? Gottlieb: Well, with worldwide destruction a certain alternative... Do I really have a choice? Dr. Newton Geiszler: Then say it with me, my man: "We're gonna own this bad boy!" Gottlieb: By Jove, we are going to own this thing for sure!
Old Man on Beach: Hey, what is it? Child: It's just an old toy. We never find anything good.
Dr. Newton Geiszler: Oh, my God. Oh, my God. This isn't a refuge. This is - This is a buffet line! He knows I'm here. He knows I'm here! Chinese Girl in Anti-Kaiju Refuge: He knows we're all here! Dr. Newton Geiszler: No, you don't understand, he's trying to get me! He knows I'm here and he's trying to get me! Chinese Girl in Anti-Kaiju Refuge: [speaks Japanese to the others in the refuge] The Kaiju wants the little dude! The Kaiju wants the little dude!
Dr. Newton Geiszler: I need to access a Kaiju brain. Completely intact. Hannibal Chau: No, no, no. The skull plate is so dense that by the time you drill into it... Dr. Newton Geiszler: The brain's rotted away. But I'm talking about the secondary brain. Now we both know that the Kaiju are so large they need two brains to move around, like a dinosaur. I want to get my hands on that. Hannibal Chau: Mm. What the hell do you want a secondary brain for, anyway? I mean, every part of the Kaiju sells. Cartilage, spleen, liver. Even the crap! One cubic meter of crap has enough phosphorus in it to fertilize a whole field!
Gipsy Danger AI: Gipsy Danger, report to Bay 08, Level A-42. Kaiju. Codename: Knifehead. Category 3. Raleigh Becket: Yo, Yancy, wake up! Movement in the Breach.
Herc Hansen: This is Marshall Hercules Hansen. The breach is sealed. Stop the clock!
Herc Hansen: When you drift with someone, you feel like there's nothing to talk about. I just don't wanna regret all the things that I never said. Chuck Hansen: That won't- you don't need to. I know. I always have. [Crouches down to pet his dog] Chuck Hansen: Hey. Hey, handsome. Oh, I'm gonna miss you. [Stands back up to his father] Chuck Hansen: You look after him for me. [Walks away to join Pentecost] Herc Hansen: [to Pentecost] Stacker! That's my son you got there. My *son*.
Raleigh Becket: It's ok Mako. I can do this alone. All I have to do is fall. Anyone can fall.
Stacker Pentecost: Do not let my calm demeanor fool you, *RANGER*! Now is not a good moment for your insubordination! Mako is too inexperienced to reign in her memories during combat. Raleigh Becket: That's not why you grounded her. I was in her memories. I saw everything. Stacker Pentecost: I don't care what you think you saw. [Cut to scene of Mako's memory of being rescued as a child by Pentecost] Raleigh Becket: I know what she means to you. I saw it, I- [Pentecost turns and leaves the room] Raleigh Becket: Hey. Hey! [Raleigh follows him] Stacker Pentecost: This conversation is over. Raleigh Becket: Marshall. Marshall! Can we just talk about this for one second? [Grabs Pentecost's arm from behind. Pentecost pulls his arm away as he turns to Becket] Raleigh Becket: You rescued her. You raised her. But, you're not protecting her now. You are holding her back. Stacker Pentecost: One: Don't you ever touch me again. Two: Don't you ever touch me again. Now. You have no idea who the Hell I am or where I've come from. And I am not about to tell you my whole life story. All I need to be to you and everybody else on this dump is a fixed point. The last man standing. I do not need your sympathy or your admiration. All I need is your compliance and your fighting skills. And if I can't get that, then you can go back to the wall I found you crawling on. Do I make myself clear? [Becket nods in resignation. Pentecost turns his head toward him and points to his ear] Raleigh Becket: Yes, sir. Stacker Pentecost: Good.
