After a teenager has a terrifying vision of him and his friends dying in a plane crash, he prevents the accident only to have Death hunt them down, one by one.
Bludworth: In death there are no accidents, no coincidences, no mishaps, and no escapes.
Tod Waggner: We say that the hour of death cannot be forecast. But when we say this, we imagine that the hour is placed in an obscure and distant future. It never occurs to us that it has any connection with the day already begun, or that death could arrive this same afternoon - this afternoon which is so certain, and which has every hour filled in advance.
Bludworth: You have to realize is that we're just a mouse that a cat has by the tail, every single move we make from the mundane to the monumental, the red light that we stop at or run, the people we have sex with or want with us, the airplanes that we ride or walk out of, it's all part of deaths sadistic design. Leading to the grave.
Carter: As far as I know, this shit can circle around and get us all again. But for right now, I'm the safest fucker in the world, because you're still NEXT.
Carter: What are you God now?
[repeated line] Billy Hitchcock: Carter, you dick!
Carter: I'm never gonna die!
Billy Hitchcock: There they go, here we stay. [as he watches the plane take off and then explode]
Tod Waggner: Alex. Let's go take a shit. Alex Browning: Take a shit by yourself. Tod Waggner: No, dude. Listen okay. Listen. Take some knowledge. We're about to board a seven-hour flight. The toilets in coach are barely ventilated closets. Alright, if that. Now lets say half way through the flight, right, your body wants that airplane food out. You got to go torque a wicked cable. Then directly after you, walks in Christa or Blake. [Alex and Tod look at Christa and Blake, who are sitting down reading magazines] Tod Waggner: You want them to associate you with that watery sting in their eye? That reflexive gag at the back of their throat?
Carter: [mocking Alex] The plane, it's gonna blow up. It's gonna blow up! Tod Waggner: Hey, fuck you, Horton, okay? Fuck you! Val Lewton: Tod! Alex Browning: The only trip you're taking is to the fucking *hospital*! [He attacks Carter and they start to fight]
Clear Rivers: This gives me a rush! Alex Browning: What? This place? Clear Rivers: Doing something I'm not supposed to.
Carter: We blow half a day in Paris, all because Browning had a bad fucking dream?
[last lines] Carter: So who's next?
Alex Browning: You should be fucking dead! Carter: Well, you're the fucking devil!
Tod Waggner: I never thought anything could look worse than my yearbook photo... George: How do you think I feel having to look at you all the time?
Clear Rivers: [to Alex] Because of you, I'm still alive. [gives him rose] Clear Rivers: Thank you.
Alex Browning: Ms. Lewton, I... Val Lewton: [interupts] Don't talk to me, you scare the Hell outta me.
Alex Browning: [in the Carter's car with him, Clear and Billy] You think it's gonna make it easier to know, Carter? [Everyone looks at him] Alex Browning: It's not. It's gonna make it fuckin' harder.
Alex Browning: [describing his premonition] I saw it. Like, I don't know I just saw it. I saw it on the runway, I saw it take off. I saw out my window. I saw the ground. And-and the cabin starts to shake, right? And the left side blows up and the whole plane just explodes! And it was so real, just how everything happens, you know? Tod Waggner: You've been on a lot of planes that blew up? Val Lewton: You must have fallen asleep.
Bludworth: I'll see you soon.
[in Carter's car] Billy Hitchcock: Stay below the speed limit. And, oh: don't pass on the right. Carter: Wait a minute. I'm havin' a vision here. [to Billy] Carter: You're the next one man. Billy Hitchcock: Hey, man. Why'd you say something like that? Carter: Because if you don't shut up, *I'm* gonna fuckin' kill you!
Terry: I'm moving on, Carter. And if you want to waste your life beating the shit out of Alex every time you see him then you can just drop fucking dead!
Clear Rivers: When I was a kid, like six or seven, I used to worry so much about my parents dying. Lying awake at night, just worrying. Alex Browning: Most kids do, I guess. Clear Rivers: Most kids never have it happen.
Alex Browning: I saw it happen!
Bludworth: [to Alex] You already did that by walking off the plane. Now you gotta out when and how it'll come back at you. Play your hunch, Alex. If you think you can get away from it. But beware the risk of cheating the plan, disrespecting the design... could initiate a horrifying fury that would terrorize even the Grim Reaper - and you don't even want to fuck with that MacDaddy.
Alex Browning: We're all on the same list.
Billy Hitchcock: And I fucking hated French class!
Clear Rivers: It depends on which one of us is next.
[Having just been jolted out of his premonition, Alex is wild-eyed and hyperventilating as he verifies that the tray table latch is broken, which means his vision was real] Flight Attendant: Is there a a problem, sir? Carter: What's your fuckin' problem? Mr. Larry Murnau: [Speaking in French] What is it? Alex Browning: [screaming] This fuckin' plane's gonna explode!
Mr. Ken Browning: Live it up Alex. Ya got your whole life ahead of you.
Hare Krishna: Death is not the end. Val Lewton: It will be for you if you keep harassing my students.
Clear Rivers: Almost autumn. Alex Browning: It's only the end of June. Clear Rivers: Yeah, but everything's always in transition. If you focus, even now, just one week into summer, you can almost feel autumn coming. Clear Rivers: [turns toward Alex] Clear Rivers: Kinda like being able to see the future.
Alex Browning: There's this pattern that's emerging.
Alex Browning: I got this feeling... a weird feeling.
Alex Browning: [looking at Tod in the funeral home] Is that him? Clear Rivers: I think so. Why did they make him look like Michael Jackson?
Alex Browning: What if there is a design?
Bludworth: By walking off the plane you cheated death. You have to figure out when it's coming back at you.
Agent Weine: Can you promise me that nobody else is going to die?
[Alex sees a crying baby upon boarding the plane] George: That's a good sign. Younger, the better. It'd be a fucked up God to take down this plane. [they see a mental patient in the front row] George: A *really* fucked up God.
Alex Browning: [yelling at death] You tried to capitalize but I caught you, you fuck! Yeah, I can beat you. Not forever, but I've got this cabin rigged to beat you now!
Carter: Well, we made it. Clear Rivers: Paris, I can't believe it. Alex Browning: I just can't believe we got on a plane again, you know what I'm saying?
[With cups of coffee, Alex and Clear sit down at a street-side Espresso-shop corner table] Alex Browning: The mortician said that Death has a design. Okay. I'm talking about omens. How do we know that just by sitting here - by, by sipping this coffee, or breathing the air, or even crossing the intersection - that we haven't even started in motion the events that will some day lead to our death: forty years from now, ten years from now, tomorrow. We don't. Unless we open ourselves up... [as clear glances nervously at the intersection, Alex draws from his pocket the tiny slice of paper that reads "Tod" and slides it across the table to her] Alex Browning: ...to the signs that It's willing to show us? Clear Rivers: I don't understand. Did you see Tod die? Did it happen again, like on the plane? Alex Browning: [shaking his head] No. No, it didn't, but, I mean, it might as well have. This is a message from something, Clear, or someone - hinting at a design. Clear Rivers: Total bullshit. I mean, you can find death omens anywhere you want to. [Alex glances at the window of the Espresso shop and sees the ghostly reflection of a bus passing by. As she continues to talk, ominous music rises and Alex glances worriedly around the streets] Clear Rivers: Coffee. Starts with a C and ends with an E. So does the word "choke." So, what, we're going to choke to death? I wanna hear you. [Alex glances anxiously over his shoulder again] Clear Rivers: We'll go nuts if you start with the shits. Alex Browning: The mortician said that Death has a design. Right? Now, what if you, me, Tod, Carter, Terry, Billy, Missus Lewton messed up that design. For whatever reason, I, I saw Death's plan. We cheated him. But what if it was our time? What if we were not meant to get off that plane? What if it still is our time? If it is, then it's not finished, and we will die - now, not later - unless, unless we find the patterns and cheat It again. [Behind Alex's back, Carter drives his car up to the intersection and waits for the light. Terry is sitting next to him. Carter glances over to see Alex and Clear, and he scowls. Terry smiles at Carter, then sees them too, and her smile fades, as though fearful of a confrontation] Clear Rivers: After hearing you, I, I do believe... [Alex smiles] Clear Rivers: ...that Tod killed himself. [Alex's face turns serious]
Billy Hitchcock: That's right! You're next, Carter! I'm staying the fuck away from you! Carter: Shut up, Billy! Clear Rivers: Billy, we don't need this shit right now! Billy Hitchcock: I don't need it ever! Get away from him! He's next! Carter: Fuck you, Billy! I'm not dead! Billy Hitchcock: Oh, you will be. You're dead... you're dead and you ain't taking me with you!
Flight Attendant: We will remove you from this aircraft! Alex Browning: Fuck you! I'll remove myself!
Carter: You have a responsibility to tell me!
Clear Rivers: [gesturing toward artwork] Do you know what this is? Alex Browning: This is... this is springy head guy. Clear Rivers: It's you Alex, and how you make me feel. Alex Browning: I'm sorry.
Billy Hitchcock: [Wondering who is next to die] Please tell me I'm gonna get to see the Jets win the Super Bowl!
Agent Weine: Nobody has control over life and death, unless they're taking life, causing death.
Alex Browning: I won't let it happen, okay?
Co-Pilot: [Talks to airport security] You got this? No one gets back on board. That's my call!
Billy Hitchcock: I knew I shoulda hit on Tammy in the pool that time.
[after Alex panics onboard] Val Lewton: The airline's not taking this very well. They'll let one of us back on; the rest of us can take an 11:10 flight. It gets in three hours later, it's all right... Mr. Larry Murnau: I'll stay. Val Lewton: No - no, you know the whole French thing. Get on the plane, it's fine. It's fine.
Reporter: All two hundred and eighty seven passengers are feared dead.
Co-Pilot: One of you can go on the flight, and that's it!
