The story of a young deer growing up in the forest after his mother is shot by hunters.
Thumper: He doesn't walk very good, does he? Mrs. Rabbit: Thumper! Thumper: Yes, mama? Mrs. Rabbit: What did your father tell you this morning? Thumper: "If you can't say something nice... don't say nothing at all."
Young Bambi: What happened, Mother? Why did we all run? Bambi's Mother: Man was in the forest.
Thumper: [Bambi and Thumper see birds flying by. Bambi looks at them intriguingly] Those are birds. Bambi: Bur... Bur! Thumper: Look! He's trying to talk. Bambi: Bur! Other rabbits: He's trying to say "bird." Thumper: Say "bird." [wiggles his nose] Bambi: Bur. [wiggles nose] Thumper: Bird. Bambi: Bur! Thumper: Uh-uh. Bir-duh! Other rabbits: Come on, say "bird." Say "bird!" Bambi: Bird! [rabbits scatter and run to their mother] Other rabbits: He talked, he talked! He talked, Mama! The Young Prince said "bird." Bambi: Bird, bird, bird, bird, bird bird! [Bambi sees a yellow butterfly, which he begins to chase until it lands on his tail] Bambi: Bird! Thumper: No, that's not a bird. That's a butterfly. Bambi: Butterfly? Butter- [Bambi sees the butterfly has now gone; he then runs over to a big yellow flower among some other wildflowers] Bambi: Butterfly! Thumper: No, that's a flower. Bambi: Flower? Thumper: Uh-huh, it's purty. [Thumper smells the flowers] Bambi: Purty. [Bambi starts smelling the flowers, and comes nose-to-nose with a little skunk] Bambi: Flower! Flower: Me? Thumper: [laughing hysterically] That's not a flower! He's a little... Flower: Oh, that's all right. He can call me a flower if he wants to; I don't mind. Bambi: Purty. Purty flower! Thumper: [starts to giggle] Oh, gosh.
Thumper: "Eating greens is a special treat, It makes long ears and great big feet. But it sure is awful stuff to eat." I made that last part up myself.
Flower: [about two birds fluttering around] Well! What's the matter with them? Thumper: Why are they acting that way? Friend Owl: Why, don't you know? They're twitterpated. Flower, Thumper, Bambi: Twitterpated? Friend Owl: Yes. Nearly everybody gets twitterpated in the springtime. For example: you're walking along, minding your own business. You're looking neither to the left, nor to the right, when all of a sudden, you run smack into a pretty face. Woo-woo! You begin to get weak in the knees. Your head's in a whirl. And then you feel light as a feather; and before you know it, you're walking on air. And then you know what? You're knocked for a loop, and you completely lose your head! Thumper: Gosh. That's awful. Flower: Gee whiz. Bambi: Terrible! Friend Owl: And that ain't all. It can happen to anybody. So you'd better be careful. [points at Bambi] Friend Owl: It could happen to you... [points at Thumper] Friend Owl: ...and you, and... [Flower looks at Owl shyly] Friend Owl: Yes, it could even happen to you! Thumper: Well, it's not gonna happen to me. Bambi: Me neither. Flower: Me neither.
Friend Owl: You know, just the other day, I was talking to myself about you, and we were wondering what had become of you.
Thumper: I'm thumpin'! That's why they call me Thumper!
Thumper: Hiya, Bambi! Watch what I can do! [jumps into the frozen pond and slides on the ice] Thumper: Come on, it's all right. Look. [thumps on ice] Thumper: The water's stiff.
Friend Owl: Same thing every spring. "Tweet-tweet, tweet-tweet! Tweet-tweet, tweet-tweet!" Love's sweet song. Hm! Pain in the pinfeathers, I call it!
Thumper: Whatcha gonna call 'im? Bambi's Mother: Well, I think I'll call him Bambi. Thumper: Bambi... Yep, I guess that'll do all right.
Young Bambi: He stopped and looked at me. Bambi's Mother: Yes, I know. Young Bambi: Why was everyone still when he came on the meadow? Bambi's Mother: Everyone respects him. For of all the deer in the forest, not one has lived half so long. He's very brave and very wise. That's why he's known as the Great Prince of the Forest.
Young Bambi: Mother! Mother! [Bambi searches frantically for his mother. Suddenly he gasps, startled by a shadow in front of him. It is The Great Prince of the Forest] Great Prince of the Forest: Your mother can't be with you anymore. [Bambi closes his eyes and bows his head, as a single tear comes out of his eye] Great Prince of the Forest: Come, my son.
[Bambi and the rabbits come across a small flock of birds twittering in a tree. Bambi looks at them intriguingly] Young Thumper: Those are birds. Young Bambi: Bur... Bur! Young Thumper: Look! He's trying to talk. Young Bambi: Bur! Girl Bunny: He's trying to say "bird". Young Thumper: Say "bird". [wiggles his nose] Young Bambi: Bur. [wiggles his nose] Young Thumper: Bird. Young Bambi: Bur! Young Thumper: Uh-uh. Bir-duh! Other rabbits: Come on, say "bird". Say "bird"! Young Bambi: Bird!
Great Prince of the Forest: It is Man. He is here again. There are many this time. We must go deep into the forest. Hurry! Follow me! Bambi: Faline!
[Bambi and his mother are eating grass; suddenly she stands in attention] Bambi's Mother: Bambi. Quick! The thicket! [they run; a gunshot is heard] Bambi's Mother: Faster! Faster, Bambi! Don't look back! Keep running! Keep running! [Gunshot is heard, then silence]
[Bambi sees a yellow butterfly, which he begins to chase until it lands on his tail] Young Bambi: Bird! Young Thumper: No, that's not a bird. That's a butterfly. Young Bambi: Butterfly? Butter... [Bambi sees the butterfly has now gone; he then runs over to a big yellow flower among some other wildflowers] Young Bambi: Butterfly! Young Thumper: No, that's a flower. Young Bambi: Flower? Young Thumper: Uh-huh, it's purty. [Thumper smells the flowers] Young Bambi: Purty. [Bambi starts smelling the flowers, and comes nose-to-nose with a little skunk] Young Bambi: Flower! Young Flower: Me? Young Thumper: [laughing hysterically] No, no, no, no! That's not a flower! He's a little... Young Flower: Oh, that's all right. He can call me a flower if he wants to. I don't mind. Young Bambi: Purty. Purty flower! Young Flower: Oh... [he laughs] Young Flower: Gosh.
Young Thumper: Whatcha doin'? Hibernatin'? Young Flower: [yawns] Uh-huh. Young Bambi: Whatcha wanna do that for? Young Flower: [chuckles] All us Flowers sleep in the winter. Well, good night.
[repeated line] Friend Owl: [everytime he is woken up] Oh, what now?
