A kidnapped boy strikes up a friendship with his captor: an escaped convict on the run from the law, headed by an honorable U.S. Marshal.

Terry Pugh: [after failing to find his cousin in a phonebook] Must've moved. Probably couldn't have heard him anyway, this goddamn ear's still bleedin'. Don't you ever try that shit again.
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: [sternly] What?
Terry Pugh: [puzzled] What?
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: You were in the middle of threatening me.
Terry Pugh: Ain't a threat.
[holds up a pistol]
Terry Pugh: It's a fact.
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: Here, kid, take the wheel.
[Phillip grabs the wheel as Butch turns to face Pugh in the back seat]
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: In two seconds, I'm gonna break your nose. That's a threat.
[Butch punches Pugh in the nose, then grabs the gun]
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: And that's a fact.
Terry Pugh: I'm gonna kill you for that.
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: And that's a threat. Beginning to understand the difference?
Terry Pugh: [after getting kicked in the head by Butch] I'm bleeding, you happy?
Terry Pugh: [after Butch has Phillip point a pistol at his face] You're a fuckin' crazy man.
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: And that's a fact. I believe you're getting the hang of this.
[last lines]
Sally Gerber: You know you did everything you could. Don't you?
Chief Red Garnett: I don't know nothin'.
[pause]
Chief Red Garnett: Not one damn thing.
Chief Red Garnett: [interrupting a confrontation] How you take your steak, Sally?
Sally Gerber: Rare.
Chief Red Garnett: Well, I'll just wipe its ass, hurl it through and you can tear off a slab. How'd that be?
Sally Gerber: On second thought, maybe medium-rare.
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: You know, Phillip, you have a goddamned red, white and blue American right to eat cotton candy and ride roller coasters.
Phillip 'Buzz' Perry: I do?
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: Hell, yes, you do!
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: [after intimidating a woman into giving them supplies by flashing his gun]
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: Never underestimate the kindness of the common man, Phillip.
Sally Gerber: The idea is that an understanding of the particular behavioral case histories should, in parole situations, help the subject to avoid habitual traps and, in penal escape situations could, conversely, identify those self-same traps as an aid to apprehension.
Chief Red Garnett: Let me tell you something, Miss Gerber.
Sally Gerber: Sally is fine.
Chief Red Garnett: Let me tell you something, Sally. This is not a 'penal escape situation', this here happens to be a manhunt. And no talkin' in circles is gonna fix all that.
Sally Gerber: And what will?
Chief Red Garnett: That's having a nose like a Blue Tick, pasa medulla, with an antenna and a helluva lot of coffee.
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: You ain't so friendly!
[shoots at the store window]
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: [Meeting his pursuer other face-to-face] Do I know you, friend?
Chief Red Garnett: No, not really.
Phillip 'Buzz' Perry: [after Pugh snatches the car keys] Why'd he take the keys?
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: So I won't leave him.
Phillip 'Buzz' Perry: Would you leave him?
Robert 'Butch' Haynes: Oh, yeah.
